The restoration of this log house gave birth to the formation of the Mountain Historical Society in 1999. In the early 1990s, Paul Elbe learned about the plan to demolish an old house built by Fred and Augusta Bartz in the late 1880s. Knowing it was the first permanent home in Mountain and a structure built of hand hewn log Paul dismantled it and with the help of many volunteers rebuilt it at its present site in Fireman's Park. The old log house will serve as an historical museum and information center as well as a memorial to the Mountain pioneers.
